The SAARC Human
Resource Development
Centre (SHRDC)
conducted a
three-week long
training course on
“Role of HRD in
achieving Millennium
Development Goals
(MDGs)” from 30
May-19 June 2005.
The major objectives
of the training
course were to
develop skills to
help implementation
of MDGs by assessing
the level of
progress in the
SAARC member states;
to focus on
different ways for
reaching national
and regional targets
including the role
of human resource
development in
achieving MDGs; and
to assess the
technical
feasibility and
financial
affordability in
terms of individual
and institutional
capacities in the
SAARC member
countries. The
course was attended
by 22 participants
from seven SAARC
Member Countries.

Training Programme on
Rural
Development through
HRD
The SHRDC organised
a three-week
training course on
“Rural
Development through
HRD” from 08-28
August 2005 with the
objective to develop
knowledge and skills
among participants
in order to design,
implement, monitor
and evaluate rural
development policies
and programs. The
training course
assessed the
successes and
failures of rural
development
programmes
implemented or being
implemented in South
Asia and analysed
various strategies
being adopted for
rural development in
the region. The
course was attended
by 20 participants
from five SAARC
Member States:
Bangladesh, India,
Maldives, Pakistan
and Sri Lanka.

Training Programme
on
Techniques of
Poverty / MDGs
Analysis
The SHRDC in
collaboration with
UNDP under SAARC
UNDP Partnership
Programme (SUPP)
conducted a two-week
training course on
“Techniques of
Poverty/MDGs
Analysis” from
19-30 September
2005. The objective
of the training
course was to
enhance poverty/
MDGs assessment
capacity in the
SAARC Member States
through
identification of
challenges and
opportunities and
strategies. The
training allowed
participants to
enhance their
technical know-how
to understand with
better clarity the
techniques of
poverty analysis
with in the
framework of four
basic themes: high
equitable pro-poor
growth, human
development, good
governance and
social protection.
The training course
enhanced the
understanding of the
participants on
various dimensions
of poverty and their
linkages with human
capital development.
The course was
attended by 22
participants from
all the SAARC Member
States and 3
participants from
UNDP regional
offices.

South Asian Free
Trade Area (SAFTA)”
from 22-26 May 2006 in
collaboration with
UNDP under SAARC
–UNDP Partnership
Programme (SUPP).
The objective of the
training course was to provide
up-to-date
theoretical
knowledge on
regional trading
blocs in the world
as well as
understanding of
implementation of
SAFTA and associated
difficulties in its
implementation to
the public sector
officials and
business executives
of the SAARC region.
The course has suggest strategies
and policies to
overcome these
difficulties. About
25 participants from
all SAARC Member
States has participate in the
training course.

objective of SDGs
framework is to
reduce the
percentage of the
population living
below the poverty
line by one half by
2015 as set out by

Development Goals.

accomplished through
increased economic

physical and social
assets, and social
safety nets for
those who are too
weak to participate
in the market-based
growth process.
